Should convicted criminals have the right to vote?

In April 2016, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe issued an executive order which restored voting rights to more than 200,000 convicted felons living in the state. The order overturned the state’s practice of felony disenfranchisement, which excludes people from voting who have been convicted of a criminal defense. The 14th amendment of the United States prohibits citizens from voting who have participated in a “rebellion, or other crime” but allows states to determine which crimes qualify for voter disenfranchisement. In the U.S. approximately 5.8 million people are inelig… ible to vote due to voter disenfranchisement and only two states, Maine and Vermont, have no restrictions on allowing felons to vote. Opponents of felon voting rights argue that a citizen forfeits their rights to vote when they are convicted of a felony. Proponents argue that the arcane law disenfranchises millions of Americans from participating in democracy and has an adverse affect on poor communities.

Colorado Passes Bill That Opens Voting Centers In Prisons

The Colorado legislature on Friday adopted a first-in-the-nation reform last week to fix this. Senate Bill 72, which now awaits the signature of Governor Jared Polis to become law, would give people held in local jails a lot more opportunities to obtain and cast a ballot.It would require that sheriffs establish polling stations within local jails across Colorado each general election to operate for at least one six-hour period. It would also require every jail to designate a ballot drop-off location, for those who want to vote by mail.Colorado would be the first state to enact a mandate of this sort. Nevada, Massachusetts, and Washington state have recently passed initiatives meant to make jail voting easier, but none feature the central requirement of Colorado’s: turning local jails into in-person polling places.“It’s really a gold standard for what all states can aspire to,” Carmen López, an expert on jail voting for The Sentencing Project, a national research and advocacy organization, told Bolts. “Folks in Colorado who are in jails will have the voting experience that the rest of society in Colorado has. I think that’s really important.”

He did not elaborate, but said there was an additional secret addendum that he could not disclose.The plan, he said, also envisaged a Western role defending Ukraine's natural mineral resources from Russian attacks as well as post-war reconstruction pledges.The speech was attended by his top military, intelligence and political brass as well as lawmakers, some of whom occasionally stood up to applaud.Ukraine faces both difficulties and uncertainty ahead of the U.S. election that could return Donald Trump to the White House.The Republican former president has pledged to rapidly end the war before entering office if he wins, an idea that Kyiv's supporters fear would involve big concessions in the name of a quick deal.Zelenskiy met U.S. President Joe Biden, his key ally, in Washington at the end of the September to present the plan. Justice Department Charges Man With Iran Murder-For-Hire Scheme

A complaint unsealed Tuesday in federal court in Brooklyn charges Asif Merchant, 46, of Pakistan, with a murder-for-hire plot to assassinate a politician or U.S. government official on American soil. Authorities said they foiled the plot before any violence could be attempted — in part because the people Merchant allegedly tried to hire were undercover FBI agents.According to court documents, Merchant in June met with what he thought were hit men, and told them he would have a number of assignments for them, including an assassination of targets whom he would identify later.Merchant was arrested, according to court papers, on July 12 — one day before a 20-year-old man in Pennsylvania fired shots during a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., grazing Trump’s ear. Investigators do not believe the Iranian plot and the actions by the Pennsylvania gunmen are related, according to law enforcement officials.The alleged Iranian-backed plot, however, had raised concerns about Trump’s safety in the weeks before the shooting, according to U.S. officials familiar with the investigation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions.
